The 6 Morning Habits That Make Me A Better Mom | My Morning Routine

Morning Routine

Last February, I started the habit of waking up early. It is safe to say that this habit has had a dramatic impact on my happiness. I largely credit that to the restorative morning routine I have created.

As moms, we always want to do our best for our families. Often, this can come at the expense of our own well being, as we try to meet everyone else’s needs before we tend to our own. I truly believe that in order to be present with our families and serve them at our fullest capacity, we must put our own self care at the top of our list.

I have gotten many questions regarding how I fit self care into my day and still manage to get everything else done. My answer to that is that I take the time first thing in the morning to pour into myself. It gives me the energy to give back to my family and be productive throughout the day.

So what does my morning routine look like, you might ask. Well, you’re in luck because today I am going to share a peek into my life with you!

Wake Up At 5AM

I wake up when my husband leaves for work at 5AM. Knowing that he is waking up at the same time, does make it a little easier for me to get up. My kids usually don’t wake up until 7:30 so this gives me 2.5 glorious hours all to myself. There are a few days a week that I watch my niece and she arrives around 6:15. So on those days I don’t get as much time to myself, but still enough to fit in everything I want to do.

Shower

The first thing I do when I wake up is take a shower. I really love the feeling of the hot water. It is so relaxing. My shower can last between 10 and 30 minutes. I also light a candle which makes it feel even more luxurious. I love these non-toxic candles. I also hate harsh unnatural lighting first thing in the morning so the candle is a gentle alternative.

Exercise

After I shower, I get my body moving for about 30 minutes. Currently, I am into yoga and I love it. I honestly look forward to my daily yoga practice. It helps me clear my mind and just be in the present moment. Having a really pretty yoga mat also adds to the experience.

Morning Routine

Drink Water

I drink a quart of water first thing in the morning before I have any coffee. I drink some during exercise and finish the rest afterward. I have a self imposed rule that I have to drink a full quart of water before I have any caffeine. This ensures I stay hydrated and don’t make coffee my main beverage.

Coffee Or Tea In Solitude

Once I have finished my water, I love to sit in complete silence with a hot beverage. While I am doing this, I really savor it. I take in the smell, and hold the warm mug against my chest and feel the warmth radiate through my entire body. I just love the whole ritual.

Personal Growth

I love learning and sometimes (not every day) I will read or listen to something educational or inspirational. I am a very sensitive person so some days I truly need to just sit in silence. But other days I really crave some inspiration and will listen to a podcast, read a book, or watch an online summit.

There you have it! That is what my morning routine looks like before my kids wake up. I want to make it clear that this morning routine was cultivated over many months. It did not look like this when I first started. If you are just starting a morning routine, I would encourage you to incorporate one positive habit at a time and go from there.

If you have not yet tried waking up early, give it a shot and create your own restorative morning routine. It doesn’t have to be the same as mine, but perhaps you can glean some inspiration. Take some time to fill yourself up first thing so that you can give more freely to your family.

  1. I tend to get up early for some time to potter about in the morning by myself, it means then later on I can focus on sorting out the kids X #dreamteam

  2. I love these tips. I don’t have the willpower to get up so early, but I will try harder! Currently I get up about 30 mins before my sons and climb in with my youngest for a cuddle. He’s a sensitive soul, and spending that time with him every morning really sets him up for the day.

I’d love to be able to have a cuppa in silence before going to him though! Maybe I could start there.
