Natural Remedies For Constipation

Natural Remedies For Constipation

My family recently had a pretty scary experience. My son started complaining of a stomach ache on and off for a few days. I monitored him, but didn’t think much of it. Then, one morning, he suddenly started screaming in pain and could hardly move. Panicked, I called the pediatrician who, after asking several questions, sent us to the emergency room to have his appendix examined.

After X-rays were done, the doctors confirmed that his appendix was fine, but he was severely constipated. They prescribed us Miralax and sent us on our way.

I always research pharmaceuticals before I give them to my kids. After looking into it, I decided that I would rather try natural remedies for constipation before resorting to Miralax.

I am happy to say that it has been several weeks and my son has been completely relieved of his discomfort. We did not have to resort to using Miralax or any other pharmaceuticals. I wanted to share our regimen in case this may benefit others going through the same thing.

I do want to encourage you to consult with your doctor if you are your child are suffering from severe abdominal pain. You want to be sure to rule out anything more serious before trying to treat yourself. I am sharing my experience for informational purposes only.

Increased Fluids

I think this is the single most important step we took to relieving my son’s constipation. He has never been a big drinker so I made sure to monitor the amount of water he was drinking every day. These are the ways that I made sure he was drinking plenty of water:

  1. Serve a cup of water with lemon before breakfast
  2. Send to school with a 18 oz water bottle and encourage him to drink the whole thing before he comes home
  3. Serve a cup of water with every meal or snack and encourage him to drink it

I want to note that my son is old enough to understand how doing this will benefit him. This might not be as easy to do with younger children.

Lots of Fruits And Veggies

One of the first things we changed when we went home was his diet. I strictly limited all processed foods and increased his fruit and veggie intake, especially those with a high water content. The fiber plus the added water helps move things along.

Limit Gluten, Dairy And Sugar

These three foods can make constipation worse. I didn’t completely remove these from his diet, but I did make sure he wasn’t eating too much of them. These foods can be irritating to the gut and I wanted to limit the amount of irritation going on while trying to resolve the constipation.

Nux Vomica 30c

Nux Vomica is a homeopathic remedy used to treat constipation. You can find it at your local health food store or buy it here. I gave 5 pellets to my son three times a day.

One major reason for constipation is an imbalance in gut flora. Making sure you have sufficient gut bacteria to move waste through your intestines is extremely important. I gave this probiotic once daily to my son.

Epsom Salt Baths

Epsom salt baths are a great way to get magnesium. Magnesium helps to relax the gut. I would add 2 cups of epsom salt to his bath and have him soak in it for at least 10 minutes.

Prune Juice/Prunes

My son HATED this, but he was a trooper and did it anyway. Prunes are rich in sorbitol, a natural laxative. I would suggest giving actual prunes rather than prune juice, but my son did not like prunes at all. He didn’t really care for prune juice either but he prefered it to the prunes. I gave him one small glass of juice per day.

If you or your children are suffering from severe constipation and do not wish to use Miralax or other laxatives, you can give these natural remedies for constipation a try and see if they help. I do want to say that it took a full week for my sons constipation and discomfort to resolve. It may require a bit of patience, but for us, it was worth it.

  1. I like your natural remedies. After I had my daughter I got really interesting in helping her in a more natural way. luckily, we never had constipation issues, ( maybe because she eats a lot of fruit and veg and I give her probiotics) but never the less, we need to keep the conversation going that there are more natural ways to help 🙂
