Joyful Habit 12 | The Secret Of The Happiest People In The World

Joyful Habit 12 | Hygge

Have you heard of Hygge? I hadn’t until very recently, but it is a Danish concept that is all about embracing coziness. The Danes have been consistently ranked as the happiest people in the world. So Hygge may very well be the secret to happiness.

After doing a little research on Hygge, I believe it is about more than just coziness. It is about being kind and gentle with yourself and taking time to really soak in life’s simple pleasures.

There are many benefits associated with embracing hygge, including reduced stress, increased happiness, better mood, and stronger bonds with others. And as winter draws near, it is the perfect time to add a little more coziness to my days.

If this sounds like it’s up your alley and you would like a some inspiration, I would love it if you would follow me on Instagram (@mamafindsherway). I will be posting a daily dose of hygge and giving you a peek behind the curtain.

Hygge

Here are some of the ways that I intend to hygge this month:

Light Some Candles

Candles are one of the most important elements of hygge. If you have been following my Year Of Joyfulness journey, then you know I have been waking up early. I don’t like any unnatural lighting in the morning, so I often just walk around in the dark. I even shower in the dark (I know, I’m weird). But now I plan on lighting a non-toxic candle for myself during my shower. The lighting is gentle enough so that it doesn’t bother me and it will provide some hygge first thing in the morning.

Savor A Hot Beverage

Oh how I love my coffee! I already spend some time each morning to really enjoy a hot cup of coffee. Now that the colder weather is coming in, it is nice to enjoy a hot herbal tea in the afternoon as well. I’m sticking with herbal so that I don’t overdo it on caffeine. This Spearmint Tea is my favorite!

Soup

This time of year, I really crave a hot lunch. Salad just doesn’t do it for me when it’s cold out. But soup, that really makes me happy. It doesn’t get much cozier than a steaming hot bowl of soup on a cold afternoon.

Comfort Food

I definitely plan on making some comfort food dinners this month. Things like meatloaf, mac n cheese, and shepherd’s pie. Part of hygge is sticking with fresh, seasonal food and avoiding overly processed junk. So making real food versions of these from scratch is the way to go.

Occasional Treats

Hygge is all about enjoying some indulgences, especially homemade treats. I do enjoy treats now, but there has always been a little bit of guilt that came along with eating it. As part of being gentle with myself, I am going to truly savor these indulgences and be okay with it.

Yoga

I have recently gotten back into yoga after a long hiatus. I had forgotten how much I love it and how good it makes me feel. It’s a truly hygge way to get some exercise in.

Hygge

Warm Blankets

I love wrapping up in a warm blanket on a chilly night. Especially if I’m snuggling with my hubby and watching a movie after the kids are in bed.

Taking Time For Things I Love

As a mom, there is never enough time in the day, and often the things we love to do are the first things to get pushed out. For my month of hygge, I am going to make more time to do the things I love. How will I do this, you ask? By prioritizing. Think about the things that truly matter to you and make time for those things. Schedule them into your planner or calendar, set a reminder on your phone, whatever it takes, make the time.

I am very much looking forward to this month’s habit. Just thinking about the coziness puts me in a better mood. What are some of the ways you want to incorporate more Hygge into your day?

  1. I’ve seen this word around, it seemed to be everywhere last year. Thanks for explaining!

It does seem like a really good ting. Simple but great. With pretty much all of these I went: “Ah, yes!” Because I totally get it.

    The Danes have it right.

  2. I think celebrating the little things is a big part of happiness. If taking a bath is a treat, then spoil yourself. If making a cup of tea, get out the ‘good china’, if having an evening drink, why not make a cocktail? Life’s to short to be mundane. #Dreamteam

  3. I read about Hygge on my friend’s blog. I have been trying to follow the Hygge way of living, but there are times, when I find it difficult to give myself the love that I so require. We all have such days, every often! 🙂
I so agree with you about the natural light of the early hours being pleasant. I, too, find the unnatural lighting in mornings quite annoying and prefer working in the semi-darkness..I really love it.
Coffee, soup, yoga, books, my pet parrot and writing are what I turn to to give myself some love and joy!
    Loved visiting your blog! 🙂

    1. Thanks, Shilpa! I completely agree we all have days that are harder than others. Glad to know I’m not that only one stumbling around in the dark!

  4. I just recently bought
The Little Book of Hygge: Danish Secrets to Happy Living, and it’s kind of amazing to read all the little secrets to their happiness. I’ve only just gotten started in the book, but everything I’ve read so far is just so simple to copy and do in my own life and home. It looks like you are off to a great start!

  5. This post made me feel all warm and cozy! I will definitely go home tonight and find myself a warm comfy blanket to snuggle up with my kids as we watch a Christmas movie! And some hot cocoa will be in order as well! Thank you for the nice inspiration!
